Invocation was commissioned by Music Northwest. It is composed to a text by Ojibwe writer Jane Johnston Schoolcraft. The piece is written in 3 short movements for Voice, Cello and Piano.

Jane Johnston Schoolcraft (b. 1800–d. 1842) was a pioneering figure in Native American literature, recognized as the first known Native American literary writer. She was born to an Ojibwe (Chippewa) mother and an Irish-American father, giving her a unique perspective on cultural heritage. Despite the limitations imposed on women of her time, Schoolcraft defied societal norms and pursued her passion for writing, using her talents to preserve and share her Ojibwe heritage. Through her poetry, prose, and translations, Schoolcraft expressed the rich traditions, struggles, and resilience of the Ojibwe people, seeking to dispel misrepresentations and elevate Indigenous voices. Her works provide valuable insights into the experiences of Native Americans in the early 19th century and continue to inspire and inform contemporary Native American literature.
In this heartfelt invocation, Schoolcraft passionately addresses her maternal grandfather, defending his Ojibwe heritage against misinterpretation and misrepresentation.
