ABOUT THE PIECE
The Diné (Navajo) view rivers as living entities, each with its own spirit and gender. The Colorado River is considered a female river, while the San Juan River is seen as a male river. These two rivers, which are central to the landscapes and life of the Navajo people, converge near Glen Canyon, close to the sacred Rainbow Bridge, forming a powerful union that is both a natural wonder and a symbol of balance and harmony.
“Sacred Currents” is a reflection of these two rivers and their confluence. The composition is divided into sections, each representing the unique character and spirit of the Colorado and San Juan Rivers. As the rivers merge, the music swells into a depiction of their confluence, a moment of unity and harmony, symbolizing the coming together of male and female energies, a balance that is revered in Navajo tradition.
Throughout the piece, there are references to the Navajo practice of offering corn pollen to water—a sacred act of blessing and respect. This is represented musically through the use of repeated notes that sprinkle the melodies, just as Navajos sprinkle corn pollen as an offering to the water. These delicate notes serve as a reminder of the deep connection between the Navajo people and the rivers that sustain them, highlighting the spiritual significance of water in Navajo culture.
"Sacred Currents" is both a tribute to the natural beauty of these rivers and a meditation on the spiritual traditions that honor and protect them.
